Welcome back to Made by Mcleod! My last post I did a home tour with you, and we started in the entry of course, and I think why not start here with my first home improvement project for the year! You'll remember that when my husband and I bought our home, the previous owners put up board and baton wall and a few hooks. It was cute and going in the right direction but lacked personality.

Measure twice cut once!
First off, pretty trim! I measured all the pieces I would need to cut for and to fit up on the wall. It was a little discouraging when I made a wrong cut, but fortunately for me this trim was not terribly expensive, and I will probably use it again! I used a miter saw to make all the cuts then sanded all the pieces and lastly used a trim snipper to get all the pieces fitting perfectly, or close to perfect, I am not a professional whatsoever. Was glueing, I used E6000 for this and it was great, for pieces that were warped I used a nail gun to pin down the pieces. I also added a piece of wood to the shelf to add more depth, so if I want, I could put a tiny vase or other little pieces of decor there, or every layer another painting. Oh, and we also finished the trim around the doors!
Caulk
The magic of caulk! Caulk is great because it will fill in the imperfections. so, if a cut was not quite right, caulk made it look prefect! I used a simple Alex paintable caulk, a caulking gun, cup of water and several paper towels! I found dipping a paper towel in water and wetting the surface then adding the caulk and using my finger to smooth everything out worked well for me, occasionally I would go back over it will some water to rehydrate the caulk to get a smother finish. Oops I forgot to get a picture of this, but if you're curious you can check out my YouTube channel to see more.

Paint!
After letting the caulk dry, it was time to pick a paint! I had a few on hand to try out, navy, a sweet light blue that's in my daughter's room, and white trim paint. But these were not quite right, the navy was too matchy matchy with my kitchen, the light blue was too childlike and white is kind of boring, it was already white to begin with. So, after looking all over Pinterest, I found a beautiful Sherwin Williams blue called Upward. It's a really pretty muted blue gray, and I will probably use it again. I used two sample pots to cover the entire wall, in total I only spent about $10 in paint! The sample only came in satin, but I also wanted this in a satin finish, so it worked out!
Hooks
Next, these pretty hooks! These look similar to some I saw from anthropology a while back, but I found these a few years ago at Lowes (for $4.98!) and used them in my bathroom they are great there and even better here! They hold so much! I got my husband to help me with putting theses on the wall and to teach me more about wall anchors and how to use the drill efficiently. We used heavy duty wall anchors that can hold up to 80 pounds on the portions that were not wood.

The Reveal!
Goodness. The color, hooks, and trim! So beautiful and exactly what I wanted! this took me the whole month of February to complete, some may have done it in a weekend but as a busy mom you do want you can when you can. with your sitting in the formal living space and looking over to the entry way you can tell now someone put more thought into the design.
I love color, and I am so happy that I decided to give my home another color to work with! I really thought about keeping it white, but it feels so much more special with a new color. I think adding in more than one hue or shade of color into a home adds more to the story of the house. In total I spent: $122.82 on materials. There's still more to do in my home and I hope you come back for more! See ya!
